Thinking about Storj as a cloud storage option for Plex.

I'm always someone who like to try something new. If I'm in a store and I see a new product, I might try it just to see how good it is. I might be in a tech store and see something new and think about trying it out. Well, with software I'm going to 100% try it out.

New Decentralized storage options have been coming out recently, two of them have caught my eye, Internxt and Storj. The latter has a doc page that shows you how to use Plex with the service as a private streaming service.

Now I've set up my Plex server in many different ways, on prem, cloud and a hybrid of the two. My old cloud option costed quite a bit if you consider the large library I have. So the first question I had was how much is this going to cost me?

Well the free plan gives you 150GB of storage and bandwidth. The Pro account is $4/TB storage and $7/TB bandwidth. With this account you do get the orginial free 150GB to use and the above is what you pay after you use the 150/GB of storage and bandwidth. Which I do like I think the tier model isn't fair to users who might fall halfway between a tier and can't get credit for the unused portion. This way you just way for what you use.

So now that that question is answered. I though of ways I would deploy my Plex server. I can just continue to use the NUC I have at the house. which probably is a good option since the data wouldn't be her also causing a burden on my internet connection. I also thought about using Linode. Then I said to myself that's another 5 dollars a month to do that. but you don't run a server on you consumer internet connection. I do have to think about the fact that my lifestyle has changed and I won't be home as much as before. Having a Linode gives me more of a secure access than trying to remote into my NUC at home. So that is something I have to think about.

So, I'm going to try it out with a small part of my library and see how it works with my current setup with the NUC, then I will try it using Linode and figure out which is the best for me. I do have secure options to connect home but as an IT Professional I surely wouldn't say anything here on how I would do it. :)

Below is the link to the doc if anyone wants to try it also. Its fun and educational.
